Painted the exterior of the house

Experience and Good Comments

At the end of August, we decided to paint the house exterior and add a new window. So I called contractors to give estimates for each project. After installing the window, the exterior trim of the window has to be painted too. Because it is a picture window on the 2nd floor, it's dangerous to paint it myself. So I was in the mindset of getting estimate of the exterior painting first, and schedule the work date after window installation.

Most painters agreed, but Andrey from Jack's Evergreen Painting didn't think it a good idea after knowing that the window would be install in early October. His argument was there would be very few sunny days in October and after, and they need to wash the house, allowing it to dry for 10 days before painting. He suggested to paint the house as soon as possible, and they could come back to paint the trim after window installation without extra cost.

Andrey gave the lowest bid among the 4 painters I contacted. So he sent a worker to wash the house on September 3rd. It took him 4 hours to pressure wash the exterior. The siding looked very clear after the wash.

On September 14th, two workers came to caulk the cracks and cover all windows. It took them a full day to finish the preparation. The actual painting started the next day. We chose 3 colors: one for the siding, one for the trim and one for the shutters and doors. They bring the paint early in the morning and painted a small area on the siding, shutters and trim for us to see the result. We found that the shutter color and the trim color were too close, and decided to try a different trim color. So they went to get that color and painted on a small area of the trim for us to see again. We finally decided to go with the second trim color.

It took the two workers the rest of the day to apply two coats on the siding. I know they sprayed at least one coat, but I am not sure if they rolled the other coat or just sprayed it again. I only know some people prefer using rollers for the second coat after the painting job finished, so it was not in the contract and I did not pay attention either.

The third day was for the trim, shutters and doors. They sprayed the shutters and doors and use brushes and rollers for the trim. Both coats for shutters were sprayed. They worked from 8am to 6:30pm that day to finish the job.

We are satisfied with the result. The paint looks thick and even, covering the exterior very well. I don't see any problems.

Before painting, they took down 4 security light bulbs, 3 of which were already out of order. So I rushed to the Home Depot the get replacement bulbs for them to put back. It turned out that one of the new bulbs wasn't working. So they took it down again for me to replace and put it back when I was back with another new one. I appreciate they did that for us, as those bulbs are all out of the reach of my longest ladder.

After the window installation, they came back and touch up the area around the window as promised.

Not-So-Good Comments

The worker who pressure washed our house also washed down the outdoor sensor of our thermometer and broke it. Although we are partly responsible for not taking it indoor, he should have noticed the cell-phone size sensor not washable.

They charged me extra $28 for the gallon of paint in second trim color.

Exterior house painting

Experience and Good Comments

First of all, I am very happy with the service provided by Jack's Evergreen Painting. I found the service recommendation from this web site. Here is the how it worked for me.

Initially, I called this service provider and we made an appointment for initial estimation. It was a raining day and I thought nobody would show up since it was heavy rain. Jason from Jack's Evergreen Painting showed up on time. He was walking around the house in order to calculate the estimate. He was standing in the rain continuing his estimation. He provided us the initial cost estimation right after the completion of inspection. Later on, we called a couple of other service providers. Other service providers appeared to be very professional, but the cost was much higher than the offer by Jack's Evergreen Painting. Finally, we decided to go with Jack's Evergreen Painting.

When a team from Jack's Evergreen Painting showed up for the work, Chris and Rene were very friendly and their team was very professional. They first washed house sidings. After painting front side of house twice, Chris mentioned to us and he was not quite satisfied with the looking after painting. He said they would try paint a couple of more times in order to see even painting on shingles. After they repainted, the quality of entire side painting looked pretty good. This shows they are very professional by achieving the best quality as much as they could.

I would definitely recommend this service provider to home owners. If I need painting for my house again, I would go for this service provider.

Exterior painting for a 2-story house (around 2100 sqft - 2200 sqft)

Experience and Good Comments

I used Jack's Ever Green Painting to do the exterior painting for my house on the week of 7/6 and was overall satisfied with the service they provided.

The project is to do the following:
1. Exterior painting: two colors - body color, and trim color
2. Front door painting: change to a new color

The whole process started at beginning of April for the quotation. I selected the below vendors (1 from yelp , others from our internal discussion group)
> Vendor 1: big company, good feedback from email discussion
About 8.5K + tax
30% down to start the project
> Vendor 2: private workshop. Owner do the paint job.
About 4.1K + tax
50% down to start the project
> Vendor 3: the yelp one. About 7K.
> Vendor 4: no onsite visit, only estimated with google map street view.
About 5/6K range
> Vendor 5: very detailed estimation, clearly explained every detailed steps for the whole process.
About 5K + tax
(actually, if they could cut the price down to around 4.5K, I might go with them)
> Jack's Ever Green Painting:
About 3.6K + tax

I am a "price sensitive" people and finally selected Jack's Ever Green Painting.

The following communication is OK. After confirmed with them my decision, I have to be prompt to check with them about the schedule/color selection (they could provide 3 colors to choose from, for free.)
But overall, the process is OK: I clarified my requirement, and confirmed my schedule.

On 6/26, they arrived my house to wash the house and apply 3 sample colors for me to choose. And, take the down pay. :)
However, they forgot to wash a small area of my exterior wall (which is covered by a small storage room, and they need to get into that area to wash the house's exterior wall)

On 7/6, two people come and the overall project finished within 3 days. Schedule wise, this is good.
Quality wise, I won't say the project is great but this met my expectation (esp considering the price): some of the area is not sanded, some of the area is not primed enough to protect the wood. But all were corrected after I pointed out. Still, I am satisfied with the finish (with that amount of money spent).

I used Jack's ever green painting company for the whole house interior painting, wallpaper removal in 3 rooms and some millwork problems (water damage). The color plan was picked by a professional color designer.

Experience and Good Comments

Jack was punctual on our appointment and he looked at the whole house carefully and then gave me a very competitive quote with the agreement that Zero VOC paint from sherwin williams is used and no chemicals can be used when removing wallpapers since I have small kids a home. The wallpaper removal work turned out to be much more work but he didn't charge me more. Overall the work was nicely done. But there were some small issues left when the project was done like the towel bars were not put back properly, all the bulbs in master bath got painted and I had to replace them. Jack came back later to fix some of them and I fixed the left. The project took a few days more but it was still within the hard deadline (my move-in date). Again overall I am satisfied with this project.

I also asked Jack to do the exterior painting for me but he told me that it was actually not necessary since the current painting was in good shape and I appreciate his honesty.
