AC install

Experience and Good Comments

Dave is simply the best. To give you some context. I had reached out to the company that installed our HVAC system, and also reached out to Bobs heating which did my HVAC for previous home, both the companies offered reasonable price and I like how Bob's provided the quote and the experience. Then I learned about Dave within my company and was highly rated. So, I decided to reach out to him. He was quick to respond, he came by and suggested I go with the AC manufactured by same company as my HVAC which is TRANE and he mentioned it was due to the way they have their system, its best to have the same. He is not even a TRANE specialist, but he still suggested that because it was the right thing for me. He then went above and beyond and procured the AC and installed it at significantly lower cost than the others. So, clearly he is not only providing great service but at very reasonable price point. Of course he runs his company lean and efficiently and helps offset all the overheads I guess. I waited on posting my feedback until a year later because I wanted to look at his service. Couple of times, I have had to reach out with questions, and he was super quick to reply, even on a holiday. He earned my respect completely. I am very happy with the service he has provided and I have recommended to all my friends who asked me about who did my AC job. I echoed the recommendation within my company and I am glad I worked with Dave, the wonderful owner of DHS...rock on!

Furnace check and fix

Experience and Good Comments

Our furnace stopped working properly. It was 14 years old. Dave quickly identified it was caused by dirty filters. But he did not recommend changing it. Instead, he said it could sustained 15-20 years with proper maintenance. We appreciate his professionalism and honesty. It saves us some money for changing it for now.

Installation of AC unit

Experience and Good Comments

Extremely bad experience where the service men failed to schedule the inspection for the mechanical work and maliciously kept it without letting us know the deadline resulting the city asking us to have the inspection one year later. The service men and the owners are using all the non-professional tools including yahoo mail for business communications, super inpatient and rude in email communications. This kind of bad behavior and bad business needs to be shut down. We are pursuing the legal actions now.

Install Heat pump for a 4000 sqft house

Experience and Good Comments

Dave comes to my house and do a in person estimation. He checked furnace system and suggested available options. He explained to me how new system works and compare the pro and con between air conditioning system and heat pump. It took about 20 minutes. Later same day, he sent me separate quotes and mentioned all the discounts and free of charge services he can offer. Also, he included all permission related items in the estimation. That is to say, the estimation is the final total of our of my pocket I will pay for all the work, which makes me feel very comfortable about it (he even included the tax on estimation). Also, he mentioned another cheap option with a new brand unit but also gave me his own opinion on branding choice.

Follow up with Dave I have several rounds of negotiation and finally I decided to work with him. They arrive on the date we scheduled, on time and there is no surprise for all items. Everything goes as mentioned for him. The work finished within one day and it works fine when he and I tested together. Now it's running for couple of days and I did not see any issue.

The electrician helped schedule the inspection from city and I am still waiting for the inspection done.

Overall, I am happy all the services DHS provided. The price might not be the lowest but it's in my budget and the overall quality so far is great

Install a new high efficiency two stage furnace

Experience and Good Comments

My 26-year-old furnace stopped working on 2/12. I collected 5 quotes on 2/13. on 2/14 (Yes Valentine's day) the new high efficiency furnace was installed. I was amazed how fast the process was. The first two quotes were from big companies with high ratings I found on Angie's List and they sent salesmen to do the estimation. However their quotes were ~2k higher than the rest 3 quotes which I got by phone calls/emails/SMSs. Dave was impressive since he responded very fast. He was able to give me an accurate estimation by just asking questions and looking at the pictures. More importantly he was available the next day and carried Rheem furnace. I liked Rheem since my old one was Rheem. on 2/14 he came on time and worked very efficiently and professionally. By ~2pm the furnace was working. The work site was cleaned up carefully. He was very patient and answered quite a few questions during the process. My kids also watched him working for a while and he was friendly. He followed up the next day to make sure that everything was working. I had a vacation scheduled so no time to do the inspection. He said that if anything came up during the inspection he would get it covered. On the day I returned my city did the inspection which had 2 notes (air duct leadage test required and gas sendiment trap required). I told Dave and he sent a specialized contractor to do the test and then he came over to put the trap in place. After that the inspection passed without problem. During the process he always let me know what would happen at what time and also gave me reminder. Overall Dave was very easy to work with and I was very happy with this project.

Furnace: Rheem 96% two stage variable speed furnace (energy star qualified). Model # R96V A0702317MSA

Replace my old furnace

Experience and Good Comments

Dave (DHS) was great! I only asked for two quotes. One was from DHS and the other was from Home depot. The price from Home Depot was much much more expensive than DHS and less professional than DHS:)
When Dave gave me the estimation, he also mentioned that if I changed to use the higher efficiency furnace (95%), I should apply for a permit from the city. However, the home depot guy didn't mention that.

Later I still chose the 80% furnace as I don't think it is worth to do that (higher price, permit fee). Dave responded very fast and got the new furnace installed in 3 days, also he helped me to install the Nest thermostat for free.

Not-So-Good Comments

Note they accept cash or check. for credit card, there will be a 2% fee. But I think it is not a "not good comment", it is pretty much normal.

Addition of heat pump and new furnace

Experience and Good Comments

This business is the best around. We always like working with small family owned companies because they give the best customer service. Dave exceeded my expectation when installing our new heat pump. His prices beat every other company around and didn't try to sell anything extra that we didn't need. On installation day, he did everything that was on our estimate and even took time to show me how to use our new thermostat. He answered any questions I had and cleaned up all garbage afterwards. I would recommend DHS Heating & Air to all of my friends and family.

To repair the roof leak caused by vent pipe (2 inch-wide) and furnace vent pipe

Experience and Good Comments

After sending email to dhsheatingandair@yahoo.com, I got callback next day, 01/26, and made an estimation appointment on 01/27. Because I had got the inspection from another company (which I will add a separate review), I told Rick (from DHS Heating) what the problem is. One of the 2-inch wide vent pipe has leaking issue around the pipe panel, leaking level is 4 (level from 1 to 10, 10 is the worst), and the furnace vent has the leaking around 2.

Rick did a quick check, and decided to fix on the spot. He used root cement to seal the vent pipe panel, and silicon glue to seal the furnace vent around the umbrella point. Rick actually did seal all 4 vent pipe panels on the root, not just the leaking one. He also helped to take pictures before and after the fixing job, so I can share in this review.

I expected the cost to be somewhere under $300. Rick gave the quota as half of it, so I accepted. Before contacting DHS, I did research on YouTube about the solution. Technically, I can do it by myself, but since I went up to the roof last time with another inspector, I think better to let profession handle. It simply doesn't worth the risk of falling.

About 1 week after the repairing with 2 raining days, I checked out the attic. All the previous leaking point are fine, and didn't show any symptom of new leaking.

P.S. In case you have similar roof leaking issue as mine, hope not, before you can make the appointment to repair, you might apply the workaround as I did - to use the car towel (very absorbing ones) from Costco to wrap around the vent pipe. With 5 workaround sets and the big safety net, it can handle the leaking level up to 5 or 6. :)

Installed a new water heater (Rheem 50 gallon natural gas Performance Plus 9-year warranty) and replaced the whole vent pipe (inside & outside). Permit included. Code upgrade included (Expand Tank and Earthquake Strap)

Experience and Good Comments

The old water heater was very old and not up to the code. Dave and I had communication earier to finalize the water heater and the quota. He came early in the morning at 8:30 on Sat and explained what he would do. He worked efficiently. The water heater was taller than the old one but he got that worked out. There was a small problem that one faucet didn't work after filling cold water. He figured that out and fixed the problem (the faucet sceen needed to be cleaned). He also changed the outside vent pipe for me since the old one got rusted. There was a glitch when turning on the water heater and he found the issue (a little bit water in the burner area) and got the water heater working. Once it started working it worked like charm. The installation passed the city inspection easily.

Replacement of a rusted furnace roof vent

Experience and Good Comments

Dave followed up by phone the same day I sent him an email, and he agreed to come over the next day for an estimate. The work was a quick job and he offered to do it on the spot after picking up some supplies. I was expecting to pay around $300 for this type of work but his quote was only $200 so I accepted. He replaced the furnace roof vent perfectly and even went into the attic to replace a few feet of furnace duct.
Dave is very easy-going and personable. Will definitely hire again.
